I don't know half of you half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

One Small Step

The United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday to uphold a law banning partial-birth abortion in a 5-4 decision. This is a welcome victory on an issue that since 1973 has been almost exclusively one-sided. It is only a small victory though, and there is a lot of ground to cover before the country would ever see some sort of reversal of the Rowe vs Wade decision.

For those of you keeping score at home, partial-birth abortion is the "procedure" where a mid to late term baby is born halfway, or more specifically all but the head is outside of the birth canal. Then a large pair of scissors are thrust into the baby's skull. Finally the baby's brains are sucked out of its skull and only then is the head removed from the canal.

Now for those of you who aren't completely grossed out by this, shame on you. For the rest, this decision is in many ways a relief. It is amazing to me that anyone can even attempt to make a case that this is anything but barbaric. At the stage of pregnancy where this procedure takes place the baby is actually able to survive outside the mother in many instances and rates of survival increase slowly every year.

You may hear certain democrats coming out against this decision in the coming days and it is appalling. They will likely cite that the mother's health could be in question and yet you never once hear them give a statistic of how often the mother's health is actually in question because there hasn't been a case of one (or at least there has been so few that it's statically irrelevant). The only thread of hope they hold onto is some nonsense about mental health that really shouldn't fit into whether or not you're ripping a baby's skull apart and sucking out its brains. Don't listen to this BS from the left, or from anywhere else for that matter - this ban is nothing but a good thing and hopefully as technology increases and mothers can see their babies more clearly during pregnancy they will perhaps not want to kill what is quite obviously a baby. We can only hope and pray.

It's horrible what people justify these days!!! I hope this means you're going to sport your pro-life apparel on the 24th!

United States of America
Looks like another silent night
As we're sung to sleep by philosophies
That save the trees and kill the children
And while we're lying in the dark
There's a shout heard 'cross the eastern sky
For the Bridegroom has returned
And has carried His bride away in the night

America, what will we miss while we are sleeping
Will Jesus come again
And leave us slumbering where we lay
America, will we go down in history
As a nation with no room for its King
Will we be sleeping
Will we be sleeping

United States of America
Looks like another sigh tonight

Procedure my foot! When doctor's take they oath they state that they will do nothing to harm or destroy life. I am eight and a half weeks pregnant. You can't tell. The baby is one inch long has all fingers toes, arms legs hands feet, functioning brain, heart, and spinal cord. They have their eyes and the start of ears. You can't tell me that this child is not a live because it really sucks the life right out of you. They need your energy to grow.

What's more, if I was told that they had to do this to my baby to keep me a live I would say let the baby live, I have had my chance. And I know Hubby would say the same thing. We know. It is something we discuss and make sure we are clear on before I ever give birth! It is a hard decision but I know where i am going. I have no fear and I can make that sacrifice for my child!

A thought to think on. A doctor stood before God and asked. "God we asked for a cure for cancer It never Came. We asked for a cure for AIDS and it never came. God we asked for a cure for the most horrible diseases but they never came. Why didn't you give us the cures for these disease God? Why?" God looked at him an with a sad heart- broken face face said, "I did but you killed them"

why ANYONE would think that murder is 'sometimes' okay I'll never know . . .
I haven't heard of any woman who looks back on her abortion and does not regret it. It's just utterly disgusting what people will do as a result of their own selfishness.

It's me, your favorite liberal friend to chime in again!
I completely disagree with partial birth abortion. I think it's cruel and unacceptable at that stage of pregnancy to abort a fetus.
It may also surprise you that I disagree with abortion as a whole.
HOWEVER I am completely pro-choice because I believe that a woman has a choice as to what she does with her baby. Murder or not, women should at least have the option, because what you believe may not coincide with what she believes. There are so many instances where a child's life would be horrifyingly worse (or close enough to nonexistence) if he/she were born.
But long story short, I'm glad the ban on partial birth abortions went through. It really was a horrendous procedure.
And not everyone on the left BS's :-P

Just a small correction that I only became aware of myself a week ago. Partial birth abortion actually entails delivering ONLY the head first, removing the 'contents of the skull' (probably a milder way pro-choicer's would describe it), then delivering the rest of the baby's body. I thought it was everything except the head too, but I was corrected by the head of the crisis pregnancy center downtown on this procedure. So just thought I'd pass it along.

As for Debbie's comments, I'm not sure I see how someone could believe it's murder to perform an abortion, but still think the choice should be there. It's not like the decision for some parents to give their kids a time-out over spanking them. Some might argue (myself included) that corporal punishment is the best form of discipline (worked for my parents on me), but I'm not going to say parents shouldn't have the option to use a time-out. I may disagree with the effectiveness of the method, but there's nothing wrong with using it.

As for abortion, it's murder, and murder should be outlawed, period. It has nothing to do with the mother's right to choose how to deal with her child. How is that any different than a mother killing her 2 year old? But beyond that, there's one more dangerous thing you mentioned.

I know you didn't say it this way, but I think it's fair to call it "mercy killing". I take it you're referring to a baby that will have some mental or physical disability, but who are we to say that their life isn't worth living just because of a handycap? Mercy Killing is a slippery slope that lead to the death of Terry Schiavo and euthanasia that's especially prevalent in some European countries. As soon as you diminish the value of life, what's to stop the killing of the elderly because they cost too much to have in nursing homes or killing babies that don't have the eye or hair color you want for them? Just some things to consider, but there are issues here that are far darker than people give them credit. But again, thanks be to Jesus that the supreme court voted this way!

The Mother's choice to murder is disgruntling. To me it feels the same as someone who would look at me in the eye and say the guy from Virginia Tech had a right to be angry and deal with his anger as he saw fit! Just like those 32 people didn't deserve to die neither does the most innocent of all beings. Every time (literally) I hold an infant in my arms I shudder to think that this baby could not exist because a mom has the "right to choose: to kill! How can anyone justify Pro choice. It is something as a woman I cannot comprehend.

Alright let's not attack Debbie too much, honestly just because she's the one dissenting opinion.

Anyway in response to Tim, it's funny because I thought that partial-birth abortion was head first until a day ago when I heard on the radio it was the other way around...so I think perhaps it's done both ways.

Posted by: HT | April 20, 2007 10:39 AM

Aw, thanks Tom :) Actually, it's funny because being at such a liberal institution, it's almost encouraging to hear opinions that don't match mine.
That being said, my basis for being pro choice stands firm in my belief that a law should not impose a certain choice among all its citizens. The thing is, 13% of women's death (worldwide) are due to botched self-inflicted abortions. A woman who does not want her baby is going to get rid of it - she'll murder whether the law says she can't or not - and I believe that having a safe, sterile environment available to them is essential for protecting lives.
Also, if murder is murder and nothing can justify it, how do you explain all the people who are both anti-abortion but pro-death penalty? And don't just say "because they deserved it" - because murder is murder. (Just as a thought, if you knew that a person was going to become a rapist or murderer before they were born, would it be ok to abort the baby? Obviously we don't have this kind of technology, it's just a thought.)

Posted by: Debbie | April 20, 2007 5:26 PM

I wouldn't agree that the death penalty is murder on the basis of not that they deserve it but that there are consequences to certain actions and in particular cases those consequences are death. I would have to say that's a totally different issue and I'm crossing my fingers that the rest of the people who post here won't turn this into that debate instead.

Glad you get to hear non-liberal opinions though.

I was not attacking Debbie but was something that I had read in another post. I was responding overall. HT Normally healthy babies are born head first. Only a small percentage are born legs first and an even smaller percentage are born butt first. (which to my understanding is not a great thing)) The only way they would do it body first is if the baby is breech. (i.e like your brother) The process of having a baby come legs or body first on purpose is excruciating and having a brother in the medical field I know how they do it. It involves a lot of pressing and pushing on the stomach but this is almost completely out of practice today. As soon as they know a baby is breech they do a c-section. if the baby is face down there is another method they use but my guess is that they would not waste their time. My brother had to learn in his EMT training in the military. It is what made him decided NOT to be an EMT and that is the only way they can do it short of a C-section. I think the information you heard on the radio was misinformation. They need to be corrected.

Posted by: Sis | April 22, 2007 4:02 PM

That was my understanding as well, but like I said it was just the description of it on the radio - they said they forced foot first on purpose so that no head was out. But again, I'm no expert.

*this picture is slightly graphic as you see the womb itself, just as a warning*

I had read this article a while back and thought about it as I read HT's post. I found this picture of a baby (note I said baby) reaching out and holding a surgen's finger while an opperation was going on. This baby is 21 weeks old in the womb... thus still allowed to be aborted. You decide.. http://vva899.org/_wsn/page8.html

I'd have to agree with HT on the death penalty issue, but I also don't want to get in a debate over that now. I'll just say my position is Pro-Innocent Life; as far as I know, those who get the death penalty are found guilty of a crime deserving of death, but like I said, the death penalty is not what this discussion is about.

But something else Debbie mentioned, the 13% statistic, I would like to comment on (btw, I'm not meaning to 'attack', it just happens to be you're the only dissenting opinion as was metioned). I've definitely heard this arguement before, 'women are going to do it anyway, so why not give them a safe way to do it'. I'm sure you can see the problems with this line of reasoning. It's like giving drug addicts clean needles because, 'they're going to use illegal drugs anyway, so let's make it safer for them.' It's almost the same as saying let's make murder or theft legal, because people will kill and steal from people anyway. Basically, it comes down to, is abortion wrong? If you say, 'yes', then you should not encourage people to do it.

Don't get me wrong, it's sad that women do that to themselves (and even more sad that they think that's their only option), but it doesn't make it right. The truth is, there are other options, abortion is NEVER a need. That's a major factor in the ban on partial birth abortion being found constitutional. The main arguement against it was that it made no provision for when the life of the mother was at stake. The problem with this arguement is that there are NO documented cases of a mother's life being at risk that would merit the necessity of an abortion.

I think we (as a country) need to realize that there are greater things in this world than just "compassion", where all we worry about is making people feel good about themselves and making things easy for everyone. Jesus held compassion on the multitudes and because of that, He told them the truth, even when it hurt, even when He knew they wouldn't listen.

"I will give no deadly medicine to any one if asked, nor suggest any such counsel; and in like manner I will not give to a woman a pessary to produce abortion. " This comes from the Hippocratic oath which the last time i cheeked all medical doctors must take before they get their license to practice medicine. You can read the whole thing here at this site, http://classics.mit.edu/Hippocrates/hippooath.html
No that being said are there or should there be any questions in anyone's mind.(I'm referring to the government and those who are in the medical profession.)
