I don't know half of you half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
I think I've made it clear of late that I have not been too impressed with President Bush's domestic policy decisions. I don't think that he's doing what's best for the American people nor do I agree with many of the choices he has made. This has led me down a road of being less than impressed with his presidency. He has, however, been a fairly good war-time president. Personally I find that his handling of the situation in Iraq hasn't been perfect but has been decent and I might even say fairly well done. This is not what you see on TV, read in the papers, or even on the internet. I guess it stands to reason that the best way to defeat your enemies is to attack them at their strongest point and I suppose that's what's being done but it'd be nice to hear a non-liberally biased report on Iraq just once before we do finally leave the country.
This was brought to my mind today because I read that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi (one of the terrorist leaders) was killed in a tactical air strike recently in Iraq. This is an important thing for the U.S. forces. They have removed one of the ring leaders of the so-called insurgency. The thing is, the media coverage of this has basically stated, "they've killed al-Zarqawi BUT that's not going to stop the insurgents and Americans will still die and this war is bad and blah blah blah." That's what we're getting. We can't just simply hear, "the U.S. forces have killed the leader of the Iraqi insurgents and this is a nice step forward in the war in Iraq." No we have to hear how just because they did something good doesn't mean that anything good is going on. It's ridiculous and I'm tired of hearing about it.
The media bias certainly doesn't stop there of course. Ever since the war was started it's been compared to Vietnam and how we have some sort of quagmire. Guess what folks, it's not like Vietnam and it's not a quagmire at all. Let me explain. The reason we failed in Vietnam was because we tried to do the fight half way, we left it up to politics and we never went forward and won the war. Now as much as we're starting to move the war in Iraq to be more a political one than a military one when it started and when we freed the country we used our full military might. The reason "Mission Accomplished" was announced was because we actually had taken over the country and freed the people therein. Sure there's people still fighting but that doesn't mean that we haven't accomplished the initial mission of freeing the country. Now we're there making sure that we keep the country free.
I don't mean to paint the whole thing through rose colored glasses but the truth is it's not terrible over there. In Vietnam we were fighting the North Vietnamese but we never took over North Vietnam, in Iraq we've already taken it over, now it's just keeping it safe that's the issue. Yes people are dying in Iraq, and I thank them for their sacrifice, but really it's not even comparable. Since the war began on 3/19/03: 2486 Americans have lost their lives. In the comparable time in Vietnam over 11,000 Americans had died. That's a quagmire, what we're in now isn't.
The senate voted to go to war, we went to war, we didn't find WMD's, but we freed millions of people. I'd say it was worth it, now why can't we start hearing a few stories out of Iraq that let the American people hear about the good things going on than just the bad. We get it; you don't like Bush, fine. Just stop it with your stupid babblings that are aimed at making baby boomers remember the war of their past and stick to actually telling the news.
nice compare and contrast there, I never knew about those stats...
I never keep in tune with the media anymore because of their biasedness (...is that even a word?) and even history has been altered in textbooks, for these reasons of biasedness, it's scary.... @_@
haha, glad you actually read the post! but why would I put commentary on it? I said I make an entire entry consisting of ONLY song lyrics (extracted from psalms), and I did... =) now maybe sometime in the future I'll make a comentary, but this time around I said I do lyrics only.
God bless!
you said quagmire :D
Giggity!
um..... what does quagmire mean? ;) You should explain for those of us who aren't as smart as you. And that's why I don't bother reading the newspaper... :) I figure I'll get more accurate news from you anyway. Keep your smile ~Sugar ptlwa
Don't they mention quagmire in Princess bride?
maybe not
some more stats for you-
out of the 12 major wars/groups of wars the US has been in (including the civil war), this war is the 3rd least deadliest war (behind Gulf and Span/Am wars)
(war/deaths in combat/non-combat deaths)
American Revolution - 4,435 - Unknown
War of 1812 - 2,260 - Unknown
Indian Wars - 1,000 - Unknown
Mexican War - 1,733 - 11,550
Civil War (North) - 140,414 - 224,097
Civil War (South) - 74,524 - 59,297
Spanish-American War - 385 - 2,061
World War I - 53,402 - 63,114
World War II - 291,557 - 113,842
Korean War - 33,686 - 20,560
Vietnam War - 47,410 - 42,788
Gulf War - 148 - 1,194
Totals 42,348,460 servicemen, 650,954 combat deaths, 538,503 non-combat deaths, 1,431,290 wounded.
(+2486)
Surely, each one is a human life we're talking about, but speaking strictly in numbers, 2486 suddenly doesn't seem a lot. (00.2% of total combat/non-combat casualties in US history)
I heard a student give a presentation on media bias yesterday, so I've been thinking more about it. Not only does it bother me that liberals can put such a negative spin on the Zarqawi thing, to make it sound less important a victory than it was, but that people ignorantly snap up whatever they hear. If people would use their brains to sort out the facts, instead of playing right into the hands of those who want to politicize (is that even a word?) everything, I don't think this would be such a problem.
and btw.. he was killed, not captured
I recall hearing something about one of saddam's high ranking officers coming out and saying that all their WMD's were moved to syria, before they were attacked.
I'll see if I can find the link.
My cousin is in army intelligence, and it was his unit that was directly behind locating and killing Abu Musab al-Zarqawi....thought that was kinda cool
Funny, the news not telling the news. Who would have figured?
Sorry Dan, but he was first assumed killed, then found alive, and then he died. So essentially he was captured to die, the news changed on it so fast I wasn't able to update the site quick enough. I had changed it from killed to captured and probably will change it back now.
amen! More people need to listen to you or Rush limbal, either way it is sooo true...I have several friends who are serving over yonder and they are not very happy about the whole media thing. well have agood day!
