American Tragedy

Each and every day men and women in our armed services fight for our freedom and for the freedom of others around the world. They should be some of the most respected people in our country as it is on their backs that we rest our security, our hope, our future, and we should look up to them with the highest level of admiration and thanks. It is unfortunate that in the process of protecting freedom some of these men and women make the ultimate sacrifice. Daniel L. Sesker was one of these individuals. He was so committed to the cause that our country is fighting for that he wanted to be the lead gunner of his unit in Iraq so that he could be upfront, so that he could be on the front lines protecting what he believed in. Daniel L. Sesker was a hero.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with Sesker. In fact, it has nothing to do with the military, nothing to do with honor, and absolutely nothing to do with heroes. It has to do with a group of people who decided to show up to his funeral and to countless other funerals of men and women like him who have died serving our country. No it wasn't his family, his fiancée, the honor guard, or any of the other people who showed up to pay their respects. It was a small group of half a dozen people who were there to protest. Who were these people? You might immediately think that they are the regular protesters that get funneled around to different functions across the US to tell everyone and their brother that they disagree with the Iraq war. If you think that though, you would be wrong. This was a group of "Christians."

What possibly could members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka Kansas be protesting at a military funeral? Isn't it obvious? They were protesting homosexuality. Now I don't consider myself particularly smart, but correct me if I'm wrong but protesting homosexuality at a funeral for a man who was engaged to a woman doesn't seem particularly bright. Put your mind at ease though folks, they're protesting the fact that the government and the military support homosexuality, not that Sesker does. There message is simple: God is killing soldiers because the United States condones homosexuality. While I'm sure that alone will make the soldier's family feel just peachy keen they managed to give their actual message even less subtly as they held up signs which said, "You're Going To Hell,'' "Fag Vets,'' and "Thank God for Dead Soldiers." The group, known as 'God Hates Fags.com,' have been protesting at funerals since June and will likely continue to do so as long as they possibly can.

Well that's just great, in fact that's fantastic. I think the absolute best place to make your point about God's judgment is IN FRONT OF A FUNERAL! Oh my word, can these people be any more ridiculous? First and foremost I'm fairly confident that none of them actually know who is and who is not going to Hell, and I guess their Fag Vets sign might have fit if this veteran was actually gay (it still wouldn't have been appropriate but at least it would have fit). Honestly though, "Thank God for Dead Soldiers?" What? Are they serious? Who do they think they are thanking God for the death of men and women who helped make this nation free, for the men and women who helped give them the right to protest these men and women. It makes me sick. At least when the atheists and communists and liberals protest they're not trying to trick anyone into thinking that they're "holier than thou." They just do it because they believe strongly in something, but these people, these people are taking our God and corrupting Him, they're twisting Him, and they're sending a signal to the rest of the world that Christians are in this cool little club that you have to be insane to get accepted into.

Even with all that I haven't gotten to the part about God supposedly hating fags. I can't think of any statement more asinine than any statement that starts out with "God hates" and then is followed by a type of people. God does not hate anyone, God loves everyone on Earth and always has. Does He hate sin? Yes. Thereby, yes God hates the act of homosexuality just like He hates the act of murder and He hates the act of lying to your parents when you're four years old. He hates sin, and He hates them all equally (For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all. James 2:10). Guess what, God does not now, nor has He ever hated fags, Muslims, blacks, Asians, or any other person on this planet. He just plain doesn't. He loves us all and that's why He sent His son to take away our sin, to blot it out so that even though we are sinners we don't have to pay for that sin.

I'm tired of these fanatics taking our God and doing with Him what they'd like to just get across their own radical homophobic crazy ideas across. Yes God judges people, hey perhaps He's judging the US right now, but none of us on Earth can say that for certainty. These people need to get rid of their 'I hate people who aren't perfect like me' attitude and go look in a mirror. Someone who is gay or who is a murder or a child molester or someone who called another person a bad name - they're all the same in God's eyes, and they're all just as sinful. These people could try reading their Bible for once instead of spreading their radical hatemongering excuse of a religion.

Sad but true. No wonder true Christians in America can hardly have an effective witness anymore.

I, for one am apalled! why at funerals!?!? I'd be heartbroken if a group like that -no matter what their cause- showed up at a loved one's funeral! it's people like that do major damage to witnessing, as people immediatly think, "Christian = radical" because of these actions... even if it was only a few...

I like that verse tho, I shall have to bookmark it.. =)

Huh...isn't America funny. I think it is about time we got rid of democracy and had a dictator. We don't need one for long...just long enough to make people get a little bit of common sense. I think Americans as a whole have become way to comfortable with our cushy lifestyle and as part of our whole "less work" attitude we no longer use our brains.

I realize I'm not entirely staying with the topic of your post, but America needs some sort of wake up call. Better yet, scrap the dictator. Let's have a revival. Let's let God change the hearts first. :)

Tom, I think this is your first entry in a while that I haven't felt even remotely angry at (amazing!)
I hope these losers realize that they're given God, Christians and anti-homosexuals a really bad name. It's just low class to ruin someone's funeral. No wonder many LGBT and straight allies see Christians as hateful, even though the vast majority aren't - because these fools believe they're standing up for a cause, when all they're really doing is displaying their ignorance and blind hate, and doing it proudly. Freaking idiots.

Oh and I'm also glad you gave an entire paragraph to emphasize that God loves absolutely everyone. I think people start to forget that sometimes when talking about issues like this.

Penis size is the unwritten measure of masculinity and virility and viewed as and indicator of the ability to please sexually.
