I don't know half of you half as well as I should like;
and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
The Oscars are about to happen and the movie that is expected to take home the most honors is none other than our lovable gay cowboy movie, Brokeback Mountain. I'm not entirely sure why I'm even bringing it up, and quite frankly I purposely haven't brought it up before now for a reason. The movie has always completely and totally been uninteresting to me. Period. I will admit it has shocked me in it's box office totals because I really didn't think it would make anywhere near the $76,391,758 (BOM) that it has made, but hey what do I know about the demographics of movie goers. Well I guess what I know is that the biggest money makers in films are either family movies or are action/fantasy movies (yes there are the exceptions, Titanic comes to mind) but all in all most movies that make a lot are the movies that fit the whole nation and not a smaller group. Times are changing though and I guess people want to see this.
I'm going to say right now that I will never see this movie, but I have no doubt that artistically it is very well made. Moralistically it is not, but since when do movies follow a moral compass that we as Christians believe in? Never actually...so seeing it up for Best Picture not only doesn't surprise me, it's to be expected. There is a group of non-Christians voting for these movies, and they believe that homosexuality is an okay practice therefore if they vote for a movie that involves it...I guess they're entitled to it. I'm neither shocked, nor do I really think that we should do anything about it. Well nothing that is, except only go to movies that have appropriate content. I recently remarked on another blog how we choose what movies Hollywood makes by going to see them. There's a reason we're getting a Spider Man 3, and a Pirates of the Caribbean 2, and why Lord of the Rings was hugely successful, and there's a reason why The Passion of the Christ made the most of any R rated movie ever. It's very simply because Hollywood is just now realizing that there's a group of people out there that want to see a certain type of movie and not other types, so in turn they make those movies.
So if Hollywood votes Brokeback Mountain the Best Picture this year...good for them (honestly this year had bad movies), all it does is show that their own moral compass is skewed. Realistically I think the biggest travesty of the movie is that they made cowboys gay...I mean come on - Star Wars is more realistic than that!
the oscars are never really about how good a movie is
they're about hollywood rewarding themselves
it doesn't matter how well you can act, but how much money your movie makes
thanks man, that was a post that had me bobbing my head up and down as i read and saying "yeah...yep...uh huh"...you are insightful and i appreciate that you are right about issues and you know you are....and you have original ways of expressing yourself instead of just jumping on everyone else's bandwagon and picketting against things just because it is what "we Christians" do....i like that you know what you believe and WHY.....and that you are articulate in your thoughts and words....and the ending sentence of your post-well i might have to burgle that.....there are some Canadians who might appreciate that insight as much as we :)
I absolutely hate the Oscars. I think that MAYBE 5% of America actually has an interest in them? What are the Oscars? you might ask-
The first thing you need to know is that the "Academy" (an elitist name to begin with) choses who wins.
From the Oscar.com website:
--------------------------
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is a professional honorary organization comprised of over 6,000 motion picture artists and craftsmen. Though most famous for its yearly awards, the Academy's general goal is the advancement of the arts and sciences of motion pictures. Within that, the Academy fosters cultural, educational and technological cooperation among its members; it provides a forum for various branches of the industry; it represents the viewpoint of its members; and it encourages educational activities between the professional community and the public.
What it does not do is promote economic, labor, or political matters. Organized in May 1927 as a nonprofit corporation, its original 36 members included both production executives and film luminaries. Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. was the first president. Others have included Frank Capra, Bette Davis, Jean Hersholt, George Stevens, Robert E. Wise, Karl Malden, Arthur Hiller and Robert Rehme. Current president Sid Ganis took office in August 2005.
---------------------------------
So in other words, no general public opinion at all. I also find it humorous that it says that they do not promote political matters.
The pageantry about this event is amazing. It is so vain. Actors/Actresses are rated according to how they dress and who they are with. Once inside (4 hours later) they consistently harp about how awful of a President George Bush is.
The Academy Awards are the most removed showcase of theatrical skill on the face of the planet. An elitist group gives awards and pats on the back to elitist actors.
Imagine the typical snotty British-accented aristocrat, and thats how I see these awards.
Beyond Narnia, Walk the Line, Batman Begins, and Star Wars E3, there weren't any movies that I think were even worth watching whether because of quality or morality.
I have an easy way of not getting upset about the Oscars. It involves not watching them. I am normally not shocked when the world acts worldly. I mean, we should expect it.
True, and I don't plan on watching them, but should we just sit back and ignore it?
My signature is one of over 30,000 that was mailed to the "Academy" protesting Brokeback Mountain.
HT, you were absolutely correct a long time back about how we can debate and comment on issues until we're blue in the face, but what worth is it if we do nothing about it?
(and no, D2, I'm not saying that thats what you do, I think we all know you to be someone to step up to the plate on issues)
Yeah, I totally agree, and this movie absolutely disgusts me. It is based on a short story. I had to read that story for my literature class, and I about threw up. Then I heard they were making a movie. AHHHHH!!!!! Is there even ten righteous in Sodom and Gom(hard to spell)? We need to continue to take a stand against wrong.
OK, i hate quoting movies to make a point, but,*sigh*, I will, simply because this can be applied to us. Sorry if i get it a little wrong "What happens when the good people do nothing?"-Batman What happens when we do nothing? And I'm not yelling at you guys, I'm yelling at me. This is just one of the sick, disgusting movies that hollywood creates, but what about the one next year? Is it gonna receive world fame too? What about the next one, and the next...*sigh* Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about, but I think of the future, and how quickly corruption gets a hold, and I'm scared as to what may happen in 20 or so years. This was just a movie, but....movies...they have such an effect on people.-Leah
"I don't know what tomorrow holds, but I know who holds tomorrow."
Ha, I like the star wars comment, very funny. I find I get less and less disturbed by what I see these days. I find comfort in knowing God's in control and someday we won't have to deal with it anymore. Until then, I should probably work on my compassion for the lost who really don't know any better than to produce trash and live like it. Sad story.
I concur, the premise of the movie is way too far-fetched, and I don't know, maybe I was just a little kid that played cowboys and indians too much, but it feels like they're destroying one of the sacred images of America's history when they mess with the old west.
oscars? I know not of these 'oscars' of which you speak... unless of course you mean that grumpy lil green thing on sesame street... =P
frankly, I don't care what goes on with hollywood, but I do agree that the movies kind of sucked this year... I have yet to see zorro tho, and if it's anything like the first one, then it will be worth seeing... =)
lolz... Crash won.
so instead of a gay-agenda-pushing movie winning, an extreme anti-racism movie won
um... yeah I didn't compromise my money or morals by going and seeing that... I saw a much better one Saturday anywho. In my own observance homosexuality has become more out in the open as of late (could be simply perhaps b/c I've been paying more attention to things lately). You hear people making fun of it, mimicking it, talking about it and certainly we can't forget acting it out themselves. I couldn't help but agree w/ the person who said that if the world was acting worldly.... why should we be surprised??? ~Sugar
haha, Sugar's point was proven as this topic was discussed briefly in gov. class today... well, maybe it was a lil more than brief, but I promptly zone out after the first 10 minutes of class... XP
