and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

The Eye of Sauron

Okay so it’s been a while since I've had anything Lord of the Rings related on my blog, and likewise it's been a while since I've had anything about my life on here too. Well today and today only you get two for the price of one. That's right this will be about not only the greatest movies and non-Bible books of all time, but also about me. Read at your own risk.

So the other day at work, I was sitting there...working...as is my usual custom. I suppose this makes sense, I'm sure I was writing something in Java or otherwise debugging the program or something of the sort. In any case it is basically irrelevant as to what I was doing, for this is not what my story focuses on.

So I'm sitting there, and I happen to pick up my mouse. Now I have an optical mouse, and for those of you who don't know these use LEDs (light emitting diode) to detect movement of the mouse. The LED on a mouse only brightens when the mouse moves, and then after a few seconds it dims again. So basically I lifted the mouse and shown it against the wall to see what it looked like before it went dim. I'm not entirely sure why I did this, but the discovery was outstanding. It turns out that the mouse light projects onto the wall in the shape of the Eye of Sauron!!! I was sitting there and was like..."that's so cool!!!"

Now you're no doubt thinking me a huge nerd, or dork or whatever word you wish, but here's where it gets better. I have a cell phone now, and I'm thinking, what better thing to do than to take a picture of it so that I can share it with all of you. So there I sat with my camera phone, trying to activate the mouse just so, so that I could snap the picture before the light went out. :-D So without further ado, I give you the optical mouse Eye of Sauron, and the real Eye of Sauron

I wish I got paid that much to do nothing...

I wasn't doing nothing, sheesh, like I said I was working and just happened to notice this - seriously. ;-)

Cool--I should project that on my classroom wall so my students will fear me rather than hate me.
I wish you had a picture of your face when you discovered this--I bet it would be pretty funny :)

i doubt anyone can say ur a nerd for doing that cause 99% of the people who read this will probably do it too....i just shined mine on my tower...very cool discovery.

U

NUTS.
(but in a good way)

I think that this discovery is more frightening than cool. Its like when everyone thought that rock and roll music was sending subliminal messages, and you could hear them if you played their records backwards. I liken the optical mouse eye of sauron to that.

Disregard. That was not my true opinion. I actually think that optical mouse eye is really neat.

Wow . . . sounds like you get a lot done at work. And your mind works in rather strange ways. But that's cool.

Posted by: Stephanie | February 11, 2006 7:20 PM

Hey! That's pretty neat! I regularly play w/my mouse, but I've never been able to figure out what the red light looks like. The eye of Sauron! Why didn't I think of it?!!! ;-)

that is so cool. did you see that nebula that NASA found that looked like the eye? it was AWESOME!!!! i wish i still had the link id send it to you. but that is so cool!

Posted by: KatE* | February 11, 2006 7:54 PM

The fact that you discovered this is alone enough to disprove that you were actually working.

Saw Firewall tonight... GREAT movie... especially right in the beginning when he's doing some programming- its a cisco router interface.. I've had my fair share of those.

Posted by: Dan | February 11, 2006 8:09 PM

Very cool - I want to see that movie.

Posted by: HT | February 11, 2006 10:44 PM

dude... that's AWESOME!!!! I have one of those mouses too... only it's green... hey! the eye of sauron at christmas!!!! =D

so what exactly is your job? and do these types of revelations occur often? XD

well, have an awesome weekend!

I'm sure that's how the guys making the movie came up with what the eye of sauron should look like. The guy (or gal) was sitting there and was all like, "what on earth should it look like!?" And out of frustration of not being able to come up with something picked up his optical mouse to hurl it across the room and looked up just in time to see the projection on the wall. Eurika! haha, or maybe not. ;) Keep your smile ~Sugar igapocimm

oh, I like that hypothesis... =D

mmm also, in the beginning of the movie, they have ethereal running- a packet capturing tool.

On a side note, an intrusion prevention system has been installed on the AP/s at school. Say for instance that you had ethereal running, this is what the APs would do to your computer.

1) DoS your computer
2) Install a trojan on your computer that removed 'gcc' from your seeable wireless networks
3) disable your nic and ban your mac address from the network.

Not only is it awesome in theory, we've had to unregister mac addresses from the blacklist already.

mmm also, the girl from 24 is in firewall, and one of the funniest lines she gets to say. I'm sure her tv persona has wanted to say this many times.

And I quote (censored due to a fastener reference which is similar to a nail or staple in application):
"*forget* you Jack!!!"

HT, you don't think that you are stretching that one just a bit? I mean, yeah it is a circular light with a higher focused center, but so?

I won't ruin your fun. WOW, that looks like the Eye of Sauron!

On a side note, Yes, I did pick up my mouse to see the same thing. :)

oh dear....Tom, you have too much time on your hands to discover something like that...I love lotr too, but...ok, so it sorta looks like the eye, I'll give you that...but the eye was never pink, and that picture distinctly looks pink...-Leah

Posted by: Leah | February 13, 2006 11:17 AM

To the person above me: what if the person looking at it was color blind? then they couldn't tell the difference, could they? sure, the one on the left might be a little blurry to them, but they'd be fooled just the same... =P

ya know, I thought I alreadt stated that I wanted my own domain, ht, but I am currently broke... and whatever happened to giving me pointers? =D

Posted by: zepuka | February 13, 2006 11:39 AM

It does kindof look pink but if you saw it on my wall you wouldn't think so...it's just the low quality camera phone action that did that.

Perhaps I'll run the picture through a filter tonight when I get home and make it look more like what it should.

Posted by: HT | February 13, 2006 11:39 AM

filters are awesome! I use them for picture editing since I don't have anything better than MS paint to use... XP

domains are just a few bucks now. I'd recommend godaddy.com for prices, but not for tv commercial content.

Posted by: Dan | February 13, 2006 4:56 PM

agreed - just transfered there myself in fact.

but my overall estimate was based on paying 30-50 bucks per year for hosting service. Although I do believe sites like GoDaddy offer cheaper rates for people who don't want to go as full board as I do. Personally I like the control I have, and I don't want to have someone else run the stuff on my site.

Posted by: HT | February 13, 2006 4:57 PM

yup... I want full control of my site...

Posted by: ZePuKa | February 13, 2006 5:12 PM

That's almost funny. I was here at your site while you were at mine! :) And yes, with my utter dislike of V Day, I can handle it when looking from that perspective.
